Black Executive Men: For GBTQ Brothers

The Stigmatization of GBTQ is Still a Bitter Reality

Although a person's sexual orientation or gender identity may not be a source of distress or distraction, individuals who identify as gay, bisexual, or transgender may find the social stigma of living, as a minority brings anxiety, stress, and much more. Yes, it manifests differently depending on a person’s culture and social background, but it definitely still exists.

Many of our GBTQ brothers and their families are thus in dire need of emotional support to help them overcome the issues of stress, anxiety, and depression that could unfortunately eventually result in substance abuse, self-harm, and suicide!

Studies also suggest that the GBTQ youth is at an increased risk of suicide and self-harm when they face minor to extreme oppression and discrimination.

Are you feeling a lot of pressure to keep your identity hidden or a secret?

I want to let you know that wherever you are in your process, you are more than welcome to bring your concerns, bring your identity, and bring your relationships and experience into the conversation for us to talk about.

Battles the GBTQ Community in the U.S. is Still Fighting

The fight for GBTQ community rights has come a long way in the US. I would like to highlight the StoneWall Uprising of 1969, an incident in which LGBTQ community members of the Stonewall Inn in New York confidently and bravely fought back against police trying to arrest them.

The June 26 ruling was another step towards the recognition of gay rights in the US. But all of these efforts didn't end the struggle the queer community was facing for equality and protection.

Here are some of the challenges our GBTQ brothers face daily inside their homes, within professional and social settings, and even in schools and colleges:

Violence

Did you know 1 in 5 hate crimes committed in the US in 2015 was because of sexual orientation?

There has been a series of violent crimes against the queer community in recent years. Black GBTQ individuals are among the most vulnerable minorities in America, fighting against discrimination, racism, and above all, the never-ending risk of violence and sudden attacks.

FINDING ROMANTIC LASTING LOVE / PARTNERSHIP

The biggest challenge the GBTQ community faces is finding a suitable partner, building a strong, long-lasting relationship, and nurturing that relationship over time.

Since they have already been traumatized by the societal pressure, it becomes a real challenge for them to defy the odds and refuse conventional romantic relationships. What psychotherapy does is build confidence and courage to help these individuals choose their desired partners. That goes without saying that they tend to perform a lot better when they're with their dream partner.

OVERCOMING IMPOSTER SYNDROME AT WORK CONNECTED TO BEING IN THE CLOSET RELATED TO SEXUAL ORIENTATION

It often becomes difficult for bisexuals to describe their feelings to anyone - Yes, you read that right. They're not able to share their concerns with the people who're close to them.

They feel hopeless. They feel worthless. As a result, they start hiding from people assuming they will be caught and bullied because of their sexual orientation.

In technical terms, we call this feeling of worthlessness the ‘Imposter Syndrome’. Psychotherapy helps you grow out of your fears so that you shine bright in your own skin. It is a step-by-step process. But the end results are definitely worth it.

LEARN TOOLS OF TALKING TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY

As I said, it is not easy for my GBTQ brothers to share their concerns with anyone, including their immediate family, cousins, and colleagues.

If you feel like keeping this personal aspect of your life a secret, it's up to you. But even in that case, you should relate to your family and friends in ways that support you mentally and emotionally.

But did you know it all takes a little motivation and a push to share your thoughts and preferences with your loved ones?

You can get that motivation by closely working with me through my one-to-one psychotherapy sessions.
